0x800106ba Windows Defender error in Windows Vista

I was installing a new PC for a friend yesterday; after using the Easy Transfer Wizard (first time I used this and I can heartily recommend) to move their settings from their old XP system to their new Vista one I got the 0x800106ba Windows Defender error on start-up. Now there is a lot of frankly useless comments on this error on various forums, strange as the solution is simple. I suspect this is down to this issue being predominantly a problem that hits home user who are not a familiar with the internal workings of services etc. in Windows.

Anyway the solution is make sure the Defender service is set to auto-start. You get the error if it has not been started when Windows check to see if it is running, I assume as part of the security centre checks.

It is not that the forums are really wrong, they usually suggest a reinstall of Defender (which will reset the service start-up), but it is just that this is not easy to achieve on Vista where Defender is backed into the operating system not as separate install as it was in Vista.

To auto start any service on Windows NT onwards you do the following: login as an administrator, select the control panel, then the administrator tools, and finally the services.

Look for the service you want to control and right click on it to get the properties. You can select if it auto starts, manual starts etc.

Hope this answers your question on starting services. Can't advice on any other issues you have with Vista without more information.

As to the comment of Vista SUcK

Richard, you're a genius. I've been mucking about with this problem for weeks. Reading all sorts of forums, nearly spending money on all sorts of unnecessary Reg Programs. You are the only bloke who talks any sense on this problem. Thanks a million.

The problem is NOT that simple!

If you UNinstalled the Trial spyware programs (Norton or Mcafee), W Defender is used.

Yes, your solution turns it on which is what I did when I got that message!

Problem is, I installed Spybot and Lavasoft!

W Defender error message still pops UP!! What the...?!

Do the same procedure to turn OFF W Defender and message STILL Pops UP?! WTF??!!

Any solutions anyone?!

I have no answer to your problem, but I would ssk why run more than one spyware (or anti virus) product at the same time. They each place a performance load on your PC and in theory do the same things so why have more than the minimum you need?

I am sure having multiples running at the same time is a senario none of the vendors design for.

I know tha in some cases some are better for one type of detection than other, but IMHO you need to pick one and just use that. I aim to keep a PC as lean and standardised as possible for ease of support and quick installation when needed.
