Do programmers dream in Byte Code?

This is Boss's blog , by day I am the Managing Director of Black Marble , by night I am an MVP for BizTalk and spend my life evangalising development to all.

  • PDC Day 1 , Azure

Microsoft Azure is the name of Microsoft’s Cloud Operating system, a new service based operating platform

Windows Azure ( cool logo to come ) is Microsoft’s core web tier capability for virtual computation with automated service management
using a fabric controller for the provisioning with its design based on a balance based on existing windows dev skills + code , allowing develop

It turns out the the legendary Dave Cutler has been working on Azure for a while, all of the azure team were
touting Red shoes , presumably as a nod to the original working title of Red Box(I think that is right)

Windows Azure , is a solution hosted by Microsoft , released as a CTP with a first fraction of the initial features. Azure will deliver rapid change of Azure itself. Microsoft will move its own systems over to azure.

Azure provides scalable hosting with a hypervisor designed for cloud ,multiple level security implemented using hypervisor enforced isolation.

Azure also provides automated service management which allows it to cope with application
upgrades and OS in place upgrades. At Azures heart is the fabric controller which views all of the data centre as a fabric of hardware.

The fabric controller manages services not just servers. There is a light weight dev environment to allow testing.
which then can deploy to staging and then production.

    Pricing to be released.

    My thoughts are watch Azure.

  • (Black Marble) Founders Day

Every now and again the founders of Black Marble meet up to discuss the future directions of the computing industry to help plan the road ahead for Black Marble. This year we chose Newport Beach south of Los Angeles.

foundersAlthough I can’t imagine why people would like to live near here. Andy has suggested that our next catch up should be in Hawaii, while I think that might happen, it is more likely to be at the Hawaii lounge in Cleckheaton, south of the M62

    why

it was nice to catch up with Andy and Em. But how they cope with the people near here when this think this is normal.

    odd and this one.

    no comment

due to lack of camera in hand I did miss a photo of a dog with a bread roll costume which had a mustard and ketchup seam up the back !!!!!

  • DDD7 is now full

well it is a testament to the strength of the developer community that only hours after being open for registration DDD7 is now full. there is a waiting list and if you are at all keen on development I would urge you to add yourself to the wait list as this will greatly increase your chance of seeing me present on Oslo :)

  • Microsoft Dublin ( Microsoft WCF/WF Application Host )

WOW, I was expecting this in a few weeks but Microsoft have just announced that .NET 4.0 will include new versions of WCF and WF , with new stateful and conversational services and significantly improved designers.

The new version of WF includes a 10 times performance increase , new flow control models including a large number of built in activities ( including but not limited to power shell , db and messaging ) , compos able rules and the ability to debug XAML

WCF  includes transports for UDP, MQ , in process :). Unified XAML model with WF allowing.

Microsoft is also introducing a set of enhanced Windows Server capabilities codenamed “Dublin” that provides greater scalability and easier manageability, and will extend Internet Information Services (IIS) to provide a standard host for applications that need a standard host for WCF and WF.

Dublin offers message based correlation and forwarding.  Dublin has an easy to uses interface which allows setup of scale out , management and monitoring and support from the Oslo modelling platform

I expect that a CTP will be available soon and it looks like there will be support for .NET 3.5. Dublin will be made available to download and included in later versions of windows server

To clarify a point, Dublin is the first of the products that were originally mentioned as a part of the OSLO wave platform, as the Oslo Application Host.

The official Microsoft information is HERE

in this short post I have not done justice to Dublin , I will post more over the following weeks

  • ReMix in Colour

Two weeks ago I was delighted to be at ReMix in Brighton. On the last day I was asked to be a Judge in the finals of Speaker Idol. The speakers did a great job in entertaining and informing the attendees , taking there own valuable time at the conference to share more information with others.

One chap presented on RGB to HSL , which is an important topic certainly for me as I spend some of my life doing that same work.

I did promise to add some of my thoughts on RGB and HSL

for an interesting set of projections of RGB onto other colour systems look here

the key item that I thought would be useful in describing the relationship between RGB and HSL is covered here which is the conic projection through the RGB cube
